ESRD Prospective Payment System (ESRD PPS) Overview of Claims-Based Monitoring Program

Since the implementation of the ESRD PPS in January 2011, CMS has monitored outcomes for Medicare beneficiaries receiving outpatient maintenance dialysis. The workbook displays several key trends from 2011 through 2018. While the ESRD PPS has impacted utilization of certain renal dialysis services and procedures, no sustained negative changes in beneficiary health status were observed during the monitoring period.
