Medicare

What Makes Your Client Eligible

To be eligible for Medicare, your clients must meet at least one of the following requirements:

  • Be at least 65 years old
  • Have received disability benefits from Social Security or the Railroad Retirement Board for 24 months. (See note below)
  • Have End-Stage Renal Disease
(Permanent kidney failure needing dialysis or kidney transplant)

(Note: if your client is receiving disability benefits because he/she has Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis [also called Lou Gehrig’s disease], the 24-month waiting period is waived. This means your client will receive Medicare the first month he/she is entitled to disability benefits from Social Security or the Railroad Retirement Board.)

For more information about Medicare eligibility for a specific client, go to Medicare’s Web site at www.medicare.gov and click on the Medicare Eligibility Tool.

Medicare and Medicaid Dual-Eligibility Information
Your client may be a "Dual Eligible," meaning that he/she may qualify to receive both Medicare and Medicaid.
