Issue Name Electronic Signatures
Issue HIPAA does not require or promote the use of electronic signatures. There is a HIPAA requirement that calls for a standard to be adopted for electronic signature usage. CMS assessed industry comments on the proposed security rule, and concluded there is no mature industry standard at this time.

CMS will continue to monitor industry progress in this area via the National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics, the Secretary?s designated expert on this subject. When a suitable standard has been developed, CMS will write regulations to permit its use. In the absence of a national policy, local carriers may address the issue in local medical review policies (LMRP).
