In July 2007, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced plans to implement two demonstration projects involving the enrollment of certain Medicare providers and suppliers. One project will focus on home health agencies (HHAs) in Harris County, Texas, and the Greater Los Angeles area; the other demonstration will concentrate on suppliers of durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics, and supplies (DMEPOS) in South Florida and the Greater Los Angeles area. The goal of the project is to strengthen the ability of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to detect and prevent fraudulent activity.
