CMS Mammography Initiatives

CMS has a variety of efforts underway to promote screening as part of the National Medicare Mammography Campaign. CMS's Kansas City Regional Office has the lead for the campaign. These efforts include: the development and distribution of promotional materials in partnership with "sister" agencies of the Department of Health and Human Services, quality improvement efforts, regional and local level outreach activities, and participation in National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

These initiatives are described below, and links to more information and resources are provided at the bottom of this page.

National Medicare Mammography Campaign

CMS's National Medicare Mammography Campaign aims to improve women beneficiaries' knowledge of breast cancer screening and awareness of Medicare's annual screening mammography benefit. Health care providers are also targeted to encourage them to recommend breast cancer screening to their female patients. On-going activities include:

  • Coordination within the Agency, including all 10 CMS Regional Offices, with contractors (see link to Quality Improvement Organization efforts on the MedQIC link below), and with "sister" agencies of the Department of Health & Human Services;
  • Partnership with the National Cancer Institute's Office of Communications to create and distribute educational materials, including brochures, posters and bookmarks;
  • Regional and local outreach activities in conjunction with Mother's Day and Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October (see link to English and Spanish print ads below);
  • Communication with partners via the "Not Just Once Newsletter", a bimonthly newsletter designed to keep our partners informed of activities to promote mammography;
  • Dissemination of screening rates for mammography services paid for by Medicare (see researcher resources section of this site);
  • Participation in the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month Board of Sponsors;
  • Information for providers and suppliers (see provider resources section of this site).
