Medicare Contractor Provider Satisfaction Survey (MCPSS)

Overview

The Medicare Contractor Provider Satisfaction Survey (MCPSS) is designed to collect quantifiable data on provider satisfaction with the performance of Medicare Fee-for-Service (FFS) contractors.   The survey enables CMS to gauge provider satisfaction with key services performed by the FFS contractors that process and pay the more than $300 billion in Medicare claims each year.

The goals of the MCPSS are to:

  • Provide feedback from providers to contractors so they may implement process improvement initiatives;
  • Establish a uniform measure of provider satisfaction with contractor performance; and
  • Satisfy requirements of the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement and Modernization Act of 2003 (MMA) to measure provider satisfaction levels.

The MCPSS is administered to a new random sample of Medicare providers generally starting in January of each year. Medicare providers are contacted by mail and/or telephone, and have the choice of responding to the survey via web, mail, or telephone. Medicare providers are asked to rate their Medicare contractors' performance in seven business functions; Provider Outreach & Education, Provider Inquiries, Claims Processing, Appeals, Provider Enrollment, Medical Review, and Provider
