The SNF 2540-96 Cost Report Data files (Release Date, October 8, 2009) - The data included in this release contains cost reports with fiscal years ending on or after September 30, 1996, received by HCRIS through 09/30/2009.  The data files contain the highest level of cost report status for cost reports in fiscal years 1996 - 2009.  For example, if HCRIS has both an as submitted report and a final settled report for a SNF for a particular year, the data files will only contain the final settled report. If HCRIS has an as submitted, final settled, and reopened report for a SNF for a particular year, the data files will contain the reopened cost report. 

There is one dataset file for each fiscal year.  There is a file for fiscal year 1995, but there are only 1283 reports in this file.  These reports have a fiscal year ending date greater than September 30, 1996; however, the fiscal year begin dates categorize them as 1995 cost reports.  These reports were filed on the CMS Form 2540-96 so they are included in this release.

There are a total of 173,731 cost reports.

NOTE:  The SNF cost report datasets for FY 1996-2009 cannot be loaded into Microsoft Excel.  The Rpt_Nmrc files are too large for this application.  

Most of our data users are loading the data into Oracle, SAS, SPSS Statistical Package, Microsoft SQL Server, and DB2.  Some users have reported successfully loading the data into Microsoft Access 2007; however, the stated limit from Microsoft is 2GB.  CMS does not support or provide any technical assistance of user's choice of data load. 

These files should be unzipped with Winzip 8.0 or a higher version.

There is a link to the Cost Report files by individual fiscal year in the left margin.  This link will take you to all the downloadable cost report files.  If you have problems unzipping and downloading the data files, you can purchase a DVD for $100.00.  The DVD and downloadable files contain the same data.  The ordering form is under the Downloads section.
