Several resources are available for researchers interested in adult immunization issues. This website provides information regarding available data sources which provide information on immunization rates, systematic reviews to identify interventions to increase immunization rates, quality improvement projects conducted by Quality Improvement Organizations to promote immunizations, and individual studies that CMS has sponsored related to immunization. CMS Data Sources: - Medicare claims data can be used to monitor the use of influenza, pneumococcal, and hepatitis B vaccinations. Because of the complexities involved in analyzing claims data, CMS currently analyzes Medicare claims data for influenza and pneumococcal vaccinations only. Available for downloading are national and state influenza immunization rates by HEDIS age group and by race for 1999-2004, county influenza immunization rates by age group for 2004, and county influenza immunization rates among beneficiaries ages 65 and older by age group and race.
- CMS administers the Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey (MCBS), a continuous, multipurpose survey of a nationally representative sample of aged, disabled, and institutionalized Medicare beneficiaries. It is the only comprehensive source of information on the health status, health care use and expenditures, health insurance coverage, and socioeconomic and demographic characteristics of the entire spectrum of Medicare beneficiaries. The MCBS includes questions regarding the use of influenza and pneumococcal vaccinations, and barriers to receiving them. A link to the MCBS is provided below.
Other Data Sources: CDC and its National Center for Health Statistics administer several surveys, which include questions regarding the use of influenza, pneumococcal, and hepatitis B vaccinations. These include the following: - Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS)
- National Health Interview Survey (NHIS)
- National Nursing Home Survey (NNHS)
Links to general information about these surveys, and BRFSS and NHIS rate data are provided below. Systematic Reviews: CMS sponsored a systematic review of interventions to promote the use of Medicare preventive benefits as part of its Healthy Aging Project. The report, Interventions that Increase the Utilization of Medicare-Funded Preventive Services for Persons Age 65 and Older, includes information on promoting immunizations and is available for downloading at the bottom of this page. The CDC sponsors the Community Preventive Services Task Force, which also conducted a systematic review on interventions to promote immunization—this review is also available for downloading at the bottom of this page.
